Big Question Learning Goals and Outcomes

Broad Learning Goals

A. CREATIVE THINKING:  The capacity to combine or synthesize existing ideas, images, or expertise in original ways and the experience of thinking, reacting, and working in an imaginative way characterized by a high degree of innovation, divergent thinking, and risk taking.

B. ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY: The recognition of one’s own learning values including purposeful learning activities, undertaken on an ongoing basis with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competence.

C. INQUIRY & ANALYSIS:  A systematic process of exploring issues, objects or works through the collection and analysis of evidence that results in informed conclusions or judgments.

 Student Learning Outcomes

 A1.  Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skill of innovative thinking by introducing new topics, transforming information beyond traditional thinking, and synthesizing ideas in a novel manner. Students will also show the ability to problem solve in unique and creative ways.

 B1.  Students will demonstrate maturation in their educational experiences by expanding a knowledge base or skills, by pursuing opportunities relevant to continual learning, by initiating curiosity, by formulating learning goals, and/or by evaluating one’s own individual learning process.

C1. Students will display an adequate use of logic with skillful examination and consideration of many viewpoints, patterns, interdisciplinary understanding, differences and similarities within an in depth body of knowledge.  Students will also be able to inquire and analyze information with sound extrapolation, focusing on relevant content and eliminating irrelevant substance.



 University of New Mexico Student Learning Goals *

 University of New Mexico students will develop the following aptitudes and habits of mind in the course of their general and major study at UNM:

  •  KNOWLEDGE of human cultures and the natural world, gained through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages and the arts.
  •  SKILLS, both intellectual and applied, demonstrated in written and oral communication, inquiry and analysis, critical and creative thinking, quantitative literacy, information literacy, performance, teamwork and problem solving.
  •  RESPONSIBILITY, both personal and social, that will be manifested in civic knowledge and engagement, multicultural knowledge and competence, ethical reasoning and action, and foundations and skills for lifelong learning.

They are based on the liberal education outcomes articulated by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, a consortium of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions dedicated to “making excellence inclusive” and “taking responsibility for the quality of every student’s liberal education.
